Direct School Admission (DSA)

Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) was awarded niche programme status in 2008.

The niche programme better supports mainstream secondary schools with good talent development programmes and proven track records of achievement in their declared niches.

The ALP and LLP programmes admits suitable candidates with specific talents as outlined below

Application is now open for students who wish to be admitted to ACS (Barker Road) Secondary One for 2019.

 

Parents and students are encouraged to choose schools wisely based on the student's aptitudes and strengths, bearing in mind the schools' academic and non academic requirements,

ALP PROGRAMMES


Drama

Audition Requirements and Assessment for Drama


Students will be required to come to auditions with a prepared piece of prose, play/scene or poem and deliver a dramatic performance and interpretation of it. 

There will also be a set script in English and Mother Tongue provided prior to the audition.(Students who are exempted from MT need not perform MT script) Candidates must memorise both scripts and perform it.

They will be assessed in voice projection, articulation, ability to interpret character, depiction of nuances of speech and emotion.

This will be followed by an interview conducted which will assess their passion and interest in drama and also include a discussion on their interest in the technical aspects of drama production

The discussion can be about script writing, lighting, sound, stage set design and to explore the possibilities of further developing their interest in the craft

Debates & Public Speaking

Audition Requirements and Assessment for Debates & Public Speaking


Students will be required to come to auditions with a prepared speech (1 minute) on one of the following topics:

-Social Media: Good or Bad?

-Respect should be earned.

Students will also be given an impromptu topic to speak on/debate with others during the auditions. They may also be required to discuss any points of interest with the auditioner/s.

They will be assessed on Style, which will include voice projection, articulation, clarity and expression. They will also be assessed on Content, which will include their knowledge of current affairs, the nature of their arguments and how they express their opinions.

We will personally call all applicants who meet the requirements to attend the audition

We will also be interviewing candidates on their prior experience as well as their interests/passion

Concert Band

Audition Requirements and Assesment for Concert Band

Students will be required to

1. be able to play at least 2 major scales with good tone.

2. Percussion can demonstrate rhythmic and pulse precision on snare drum.

Percussion: 1 for drumset, 1 for mallet & 1 for timpani

Brass: Tuba, Trombone, Euphonium, Horn & trumpet (1 for each)

Woodwinds: Flute, Clarinet, saxphone (1 for each)

Audition dates: 28th May, 30th & 31st May, 20th, 21st, 22nd June

Time: 3 to 5pm

Venue: Music Studio

Chinese Orchestra

Audition Requirements and Assessment for Chinese Orchestra

Applicants are required to:

a) Prepare an excerpt from a solo piece of not more than 3 mins. Choice of instrument includes Pipa, Liu Qin, Ruan, Yangqin, Guzheng, Cello/Bass, Percussion. (Excluded instruments will be considered on a case to case basis) .               

b) Prepare an étude练习曲 (Candidate to choose a piece that showcase technical abilities) of not more than 2 mins.  Choice of instrument includes Pipa, Liu Qin, Ruan, Yangqin, Guzheng, Cello/Bass, Percussion. (Excluded instruments will be considered on a case to case basis).         

c) Display their ability to handle the technicalities of their instruments. (Conductor will choose a scale from C, D, G, A, F and B flat major on your instrument, applicant will be required to play the chosen scale for 2 octaves, lowest to highest note and highest note back to the lowest note).               

"d) Sight read selected bars from an assigned piece within allocated time of 1 minute. "

e) Prepare a personal statement introducing yourself, what you can offer to ACSBRCO, your experience with Chinese music and how you intend to fulfil these commitments if you are accepted into ACSBRCO.       

f) Have a face to face interview with the teachers in charge of ACSBRCO.

Each audition should not take more than 15 mins.

*Bring along report book and any grading or certification in attainment of Music, if available. (E.g. ABRSM, Trinity College, CI-NTU TENG Exams etc.)

Audition dates: 5 July, 19 July, 26 July (Thursdays)

Time: 1545 - 1745

Choir

Audition Requirements and Assesment for Choir

Students will be required to

a) Perform a song (no more than 2 min, without musical accompaniment) that demonstrates their technical skills

b) Have minimum Grade 3 musical training or at least 3 years of singing in a choir

c) Able to read basic musical notation (equivalent to Grade 2)

d) Proficient in pitching - audition to confirm proficiency in pitching

e) Participated in in at least 1 national competition like the SYF

Audition dates: 3, 10, 17 July 2018 (Tuesdays)

Time: 5pm - 6pm

Registration: 4.15pm to fill up basic information before audition and interview

Venue: EL LC2 / Music Room

Dance

Audition Requirements and Assesment for Dance

Students will be required to

a) Have a minimum of 2 years dance background, preferably in the following genres: Street Dance, Bboy and/or contemporary

b) Have participated in SYF or dance competitions

c) Have passion in dance and be willing to commit to dance training

d) Prepare a 2 min solo performance (freestyle / choreography)

*Bring along your own mp3 for the performance

LLP PROGRAMMES

Waterpolo Tryouts and Assessment

The waterpolo tryouts will assess you on the following:

1) Time taken for 25m freestyle (without ball) – head up 

2) Time taken for 25m freestyle (with ball)

3) Time taken for 50m freestyle 

4) Time taken for 25m freestyle kicking 

5) Time taken for 25m half-breaststroke kicking 

6) Time taken for 25m egg beater kicking 

7) Game-play

A. Game sense (attack, defence)

B. Ball skills (passing, receiving)

C. Team work (team dynamics)

Rugby Tryouts and Assessment

The Rugby tryouts will assess you on the following:

2. Three point shootouts
3. Accuracy of free-throws

5. Game Intelligence/ Game Play

Badminton Tryouts and Assessment

The Badminton tryouts will assess you on the following:
Assessment
1 Ability to execute the basic shots Lob, Smash, Drop Shot, Lifting, Pushing
2 Ability to play either the singles or doubles game proficiently
3 Physical Fitness e.g. shuttle run

- Round 1: 6 July 2018 (Friday) or 13 Jul 2018 (Friday). Candidates to come on either day.
- Round 2: 20 Jul 2018 (Friday). Only for shortlisted candidates who will be contacted by the school

Swimming Tryouts and Assessment

The Swimming tryouts will assess you on the following:

Assessment

1 Swimmers will be timed on their pet stroke over their pet distance


Do also provide evidence if swimmer has been placed in any of the positions and events as stated below

1 Top 6 in 2 individual events at the National Inter-Schools Competition

2 Top 4 in any 1 event at the National Inter-Schools Swimming Competition

3 Top 12 in any event at the Singapore Natonal Age Group Competitions (SNAG)

The Ten-Pin bowling tryouts will assess you on the following:

2 Evaluation of bowling skills by coach
