Direct School Admission (DSA)

Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) was awarded niche programme status in 2008.

The niche programme better supports mainstream secondary schools with good talent development programmes and proven track records of achievement in their declared niches.

The ALP and LLP programmes admits suitable candidates with specific talents as outlined below

Application is now open for students who wish to be admitted to ACS (Barker Road) Secondary One for 2020.

 

Parents and students are encouraged to choose schools wisely based on the student's aptitudes and strengths, bearing in mind the schools' academic and non academic requirements, and the programmes available to develop the area of talent.

 

SELECTION PROCESS: Direct School Application for ALP and LLP programmes at ACS(Barker Road) for Admission to Sec 1 in 2020

 

From 2019, application for DSA-Sec can be submitted through the online DSA-Sec Portal. .

ALP PROGRAMMES


Drama

Audition Requirements and Assessment for Drama

Students will be required to come to auditions with a prepared piece of prose, play/scene or poem and deliver a dramatic performance and interpretation of it.

There will also be a set script in English and Mother Tongue provided prior to the audition.(Students who are exempted from MT need not perform MT script) Candidates must memorise both scripts and perform it.

They will be assessed in voice projection, articulation, ability to interpret character, depiction of nuances of speech and emotion.

This will be followed by an interview conducted which will assess their passion and interest in drama and also include a discussion on their interest in the technical aspects of drama production

The discussion can be about script writing, lighting, sound, stage set design and to explore the possibilities of further developing their interest in the craft

Debates & Public Speaking

Audition Requirements and Assessment for Debates & Public Speaking

Students will be required to come to auditions with a prepared speech (1 minute) on one of the following topics:

-Social Media: Good or Bad?

-Respect should be earned.

Students will also be given an impromptu topic to speak on/debate with others during the auditions. They may also be required to discuss any points of interest with the auditioner/s.


They will be assessed on Style, which will include voice projection, articulation, clarity and expression. They will also be assessed on Content, which will include their knowledge of current affairs, the nature of their arguments and how they express their opinions. Candidates who possess strong language skills, maturity, empathy and intellectual affinity will thrive in this CCA.

We will personally call all applicants who meet the requirements to attend the audition.

We will also be interviewing candidates on their prior experience as well as their interests/passion.

Concert Band

Audition Requirements and Assessment for Concert Band

Students will be required to

1. have good sense of Rhythm / Tempo

2. play with reasonably good intonation

3. play expressively

4. play a prepared piece

5. be able to play at least 2 major scales with good tone (up to 2 sharps and 2 flats)

6. Aural Test or Rhythm pitch

7. Percussion can demonstrate rhythmic and pulse precision on snare drum.

Percussion: 1 for drumset, 1 for glock & 1 for timpani

Brass: 1 Tuba, 1 French Horn

Woodwinds: 2 Clarinet

Audition dates: 12th, 19th, 26th July (Fridays)

Time: 3 to 5pm

Venue: Music Studio

Chinese Orchestra

Audition Requirements and Assessment for Chinese Orchestra

Applicants are required to:

a) Prepare an excerpt from a solo piece, not more than 3 mins. (Can be any instrument you are good in, e.g. Pipa, Guzheng, Cello, Ruan etc)

b) Prepare to play C, D, G, A, F and B flat major scales on the your instrument (conductor will choose which scales to test you on). 2 octaves, lowest to highest note and highest note back to the lowest note.

c) Be prepared you may be asked questions like introducing yourself, talk about what you can offer to ACSBRCO, your experience with Chinese music and how you intend to fulfil these commitments if you are accepted into ACSBRCO

Each audition should not take more than 15 mins.

*Bring along any evidence of your relevant achievements and experiences, if available.

Audition dates: 11th July, 18th July, 25th July (Thursday)

Choir

Audition Requirements and Assessment for Choir

Students will be required to:

1. Perform a vocal piece of their choice that is between 1.5 minutes to 3 minutes long

2. Demonstrate their proficiency in pitching

3. Demonstrate their proficiency to read basic musical notation 

Dates: 2, 9, 16 July 2019 (Tuesdays)

Time: 5 pm - 6 pm

Registration: 4.30 pm to fill up basic information before audition and interview

Dance

Audition Requirements and Assessment for Dance

Students will be required to

a) Prepare a 2 min solo performance using a choreography of their choice. (Hip Hop/Street Dance/B-boy)

b) Be able to demonstrate rhythm, flexibility, timing and expression in their performance

c) Have passion in dance and be willing to commit to dance trainings

*Students should attend the auditions in appropriate dance attire and to bring along their own mp3 track for the performance

Robotics

Audition Requirements and Assessment for Robotics

Students will be required to

1. Construct a LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robot to solve a given robotics mission. Robot must have sensors placed at appropriate positions.

2. Program a robot to follow a line accurately.

3. Program a robot to demonstrate movement sequences by incorporation sensor inputs.

4.  Demonstrate good programming practices and minimise program length.

Digital Media

Audition Requirements and Assessment for Digital Media

Students will be required to

To qualify for the audition, students are required to submit their portfolio via Email by 30th June 2019 to wong_qi_shan@acsbr.moe.edu.sg, nur_diyanah_samani@acsbr.moe.edu.sg, nurrulhuda@acsbr.moe.edu.sg, and yap_chui_har@acsbr.moe.edu.sg.

The portfolio should include a write up as shown below:

a)        Applicant should preferably be a CCA member related to Digital Media in 2017 and 2018.

b)        Represented and join at least 2 relevant competitions. 

         (i) Photography:

-        Portfolio in Photography/Digital Media (Soft copy)

-        Experience and competency in using media software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator etc.           (ii) Videography:

-        Portfolio video-making (Soft copy)

-        Experience and competency in using media software such as Premier Pro, Final Cut Pro etc.

Selected students will be informed via email on the first 2 weeks of July to come down for an audition and interview with a prepared hard copy and soft copy portfolio (in CDs/Thumb drive) of his photograph and/or videography works.

During audition, students are given 30 minutes around the school compound to take a photograph based on the given theme.

For the photograph, they will be assessed based on control of basic photography techniques, composition, content and communication properties.

 

This will be followed up by an interview conducted which will assess their passion and interest in new media and also include a discussion on their overall portfolio.

Please note, the whole audition will be done in a small group setting with an estimated duration of 2 hours.

Waterpolo Tryouts and Assessment

The waterpolo tryouts will assess you on the following:

1. Time taken for 100m Free Style (in sec)

2. Time taken for 50m Free Style (in sec)

3. Time taken for treading (eggbeater kick) with hands up (in sec)

4. Time Taken for 50m swim with ball (in sec)

5. Game Play

We will personally call all applicants who meet the requirements to attend the trials.

Rugby Tryouts and Assessment

The Rugby tryouts will assess you on the following:

1. Basic passing and range of passes

2. Ability to kick the ball

3. Reading of the game

4. Ability to make runs into opposing lines

5. Strength

6. Fitness (Speed & Endurance)

Basketball Tryouts and Assessment

The Basketball tryouts will assess you on the following:

1. Dribbling through obstacles

2. Three point shootouts

3. Accuracy of free-throws

4.Time taken for 'suicide-runs'- Basketball shuttle runs (in sec)

5. Game Intelligence/ Game Play

We will personally call all applicants who meet the requirements to attend the trials at least 3 days before, on one of the following dates:

Badminton Tryouts and Assessment

The Badminton tryouts will assess you on the following:

1 Ability to execute the basic shots Lob, Smash, Drop Shot, Lifting, Pushing

2 Ability to play either the singles or doubles game proficiently

3 Physical Fitness e.g. shuttle run

Swimming Tryouts and Assessment

The Swimming tryouts will assess you on the following:

1 Swimmers must be competent in all 4 strokes: Freestyle, Back, Butterfly and Breast

2 Swimmers must be able to swim both short (50 and 100M) and long courses (200 to at least 400M) competently - longer distances to assess physical fitness

3 Preferably swimmers have participated in Nationals Swimming Competitions for Primary Schools and SNAG Competitions - to ascertain their timings

Ten-pin Bowling Tryouts and Assessment

The Ten-Pin bowling tryouts will assess you on the following:

Evaluation of bowling skills by coach

- Pre shot routine (has an appropriate and consistent pre-shot routine.)

- Approach (able to do 5 step approach)

- Finish (able to follow through on swing and maintain a stable stance on completion)

- Ability to spare (able adjust shot to account for spares in different positions)

The table tennis tryouts will assess you on the following:

1. Lob

2. Smash

3. Service

4. Push (搓球)

5. Top Spin

6. Ability to read game and positioning in singles and doubles games

7. Agility and Fitness level. (Applicants to submit P6 NAPFA Results)

2. Tactical Awareness (Reading and understanding of the game)

4. Character (Work ethic - able to work together as a team with others)
